Alaska to New Mexico

Life in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. We left Homer, Alaska on June 3rd, 2009, traveling in our van loaded down with everything we need to set up housekeeping in New Mexico. We now own a small house here and are loving life in the sun. If you scroll back far enough, you'll find a complete record of our road trip.

On the Road at Last

We have been on the road since Wednesday morning but have had problems with our computer's wireless connection. Finally able to get on line and let you know whats what. We left Susa and Matt's Wednesday around 10:30. It was a tearful departure. Really hard to say goodbye to family and friends. Susa, Bea and Dotty were gathered around the car (we had said our goodbyes to Matt earlier before he went to work) and we were all pretty teary. And yet it was impossible not to be excited to get on the road. Staying at Matt and Susannah's for a couple of days allowed David to pack and repack our van at least three times and get rid of the unnecessary clutter we thought we needed to take. The first time the van was completely loaded, he announced that he had everything we needed for our trip. Unfortunately, he would have to leave Annie behind. Needless to say this did not stand and reprioritizing was in order.
As we left Homer, the van was still so full that it was impossible to see out the back window and we decided to stop in Sterling and pick up a car top carrier we had found on Craig's List (for 25 bucks no less) It is old and funky but with a little duct tape to seal against the rain it is working wonderfully well. We had a quick stop in Anchorage to pick up an auto insurance card from Geico to insure us in Canada and another stop in Palmer (where it was 78 degrees) to buy some groceries for the road. Between the temperature and the tunes blaring from our CD player, we knew for sure that our adventures had begun.
