Alaska to New Mexico

Life in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. We left Homer, Alaska on June 3rd, 2009, traveling in our van loaded down with everything we need to set up housekeeping in New Mexico. We now own a small house here and are loving life in the sun. If you scroll back far enough, you'll find a complete record of our road trip.

Friday, June 5

Left Burwash Landing on Kluane Lake and headed for Whitehorse. A fairly short drive (278km). On the way through Tok, Annie snapped a picture of this sod roofed cabin. We were trying to find a Post Office, but every time we stopped somewhere, they were closed for lunch.
We've been carrying road food in a cooler, eating lots of GORP and fruit, and generally trying to pinch pennies and stay healthy. The weather has been beautiful and
the scenery seems even more impressive than it was 28 years ago. Back then, all I remember is rain and mud on this stretch of highway. Sunshine really improves the view. We had a picnic of peanut butter celery and other healthy snacks beside a river.
I took the computer to a Staples where they performed a wallet biopsy and sold me extra RAM, cleaned out the laptop and generally wasted hours of my time. Still no luck with the computer. Whitehorse is as depressing as we rememberd it from '81. The Riverside Hotel was not bad (it had a laundry, which was a plus) but the bars in the neighborhood spill out onto the sidewalks, as do arguments among staggering patrons. We're getting better and finding what we need in the chaos that is the inside of the van and settling into life on the road.
