Alaska to New Mexico

Life in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. We left Homer, Alaska on June 3rd, 2009, traveling in our van loaded down with everything we need to set up housekeeping in New Mexico. We now own a small house here and are loving life in the sun. If you scroll back far enough, you'll find a complete record of our road trip.

June 9 Grande Prairie to Ponoka

Another 400 miles of rolling prairie. Miles and miles of wheat fields just starting to show green. We're at the Ponoka Stampeder Inn. Right behind us is the Ponoka Rodeo Grounds. Their big rodeo is coming up in a couple of weeks. Outside the front door of the hotel I heard cows bellowing as I came in from dinner. This is cowboy country. Also oil country. Oil pumps, looking like dickie birds dipping their beaks in the wheat, dot the country side. The cook at the Blue Ox, where we had dinner, said it's been so dry all the ranchers are selling off their cattle.

Every little town we passed has a grain elevator. Still can't believe I'm at latitude 53. It looks like Nebraska. We can't seem to tolerate more than about 7 hours on the road a day. Takes us a while to get going in the morning and by 6pm we're ready to have a bit of a lie down. Tomorrow we should make it through Calgary and into Montana. We skipped Jasper and Banff, which we saw back in 1981, opting to spend some time in Yellowstone instead. I worked in Western Wyoming as far north as the Tetons for several years, but never made it to the Park. Old Faithful, here we come.

Ugh,the Canadian midwest and US midwest are both flaaaat and boring. Yellowstone is great. Flagstaff is great, too and close to the Grand Canyon. There is a cheap hotel/hostel there called the Weathersfield or something and a great pizza place. Oh the good old days of zipping back and forth across the country. I miss it sometimes, but also glad to have a little house in a little town.
